Stephen Lyon: Representing the Private Sector on the Specialist Sub-Committee on Regionalism

The Specialist Sub-Committee on Regionalism recently welcomed four new members. The new member representing the private sector is Mr. Stephen Lyon.

Mr Lyon is the current President of the Cook Islands Chamber of Commerce, and former President of the Cook Islands Tourism Industry Council. He is also currently a member of the board of the Pacific Islands Private Sector Organisation, regularly contributing to regional discussions related to regional private sector matters.

In 1999, Mr Lyon conducted field research in the Cook Islands on reef health as part of his University education. He holds a Bachelor Degree and Post-Graduate Diploma in Marine and Environmental Science, and based on these fields of study, he owns and operates a tourism company, and conducts consulting and technical work in the fields of environmental conservation and management.

Mr Lyon is a family man with 3 young children and thoroughly enjoys the outdoors, sports and family life. Having travelled the Pacific and elsewhere, Stephen is acutely aware of the challenges the region faces, and the diversity of those challenges across the many land and oceanscapes of the Pacific.

The sub-committee is appointed by the Forum Troika Panel and reports to the Forum Officials Committee. It plays a vital role in the implementation of the Framework for Pacific Regionalism. This expert panel makes important decisions on the regional priorities to be put forward for Pacific Islands Leaders consideration at their annual Forum.

The sub-committee applies the tests for regional action set out in the Framework, and draw on advice from a broad range of sources, including CROP agencies, to determine where the region’s needs are, and how best these can be addressed.

The Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat is the standing chair of the sub-committee. The seven other members are drawn from a range of diverse backgrounds, all possessing key skill sets and areas of expertise.
