The Hon Samuela ‘Akilisi Pohiva is the 16th Prime Minister of the new democratic Government.
In 2011, Prime Minister Pohiva was appointed Minister for Health and In Parliament, he held Prime Minister Pohiva is the leading and oldest Member and people’s representative for Tongatapu for 28 years since 1987.
A number of positions including Chairman of the Select Committee for Investigating the China Funds for the Reconstruction of the Nuku’ alofa CBD, People’s Representative Number 3 to the Tongatapu Constituency from 1987 – 1989 and later People’s Representative for Tongatapu 1 Constituency from 2010 – present.

He also had career outside of politics and for many years, Prime Minister Pohiva worked as a teacher and later studies at the University of South Pacific before joining the Tongan Teacher Training Staff. He also taught History and Sociology at the Tongan University.
He became active in Tonga’s pro-democracy movement in the late 1970s, and in early 1980s contributing to their monthly radio programme, ‘ Matalafo Laukai’. He then became Assistant Editor of the Democracy Movement’s monthly newsletter, Kele’a. In 1987, Prime Minister Pohiva was also a co-founder of the Friendly Islands Human Rights and Democracy Movement Inc, (FIHRDM)
During that time, he also participated in other public oration, socio-economic and political analysis, conflict analysis and resolution as well as participated in regional and international dialogues on critical parliamentary issues.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History/Politics and Sociology from the University of the South Pacific.
