Common areas of strategic interest
The Philippines seeks cooperation on climate change, sustainable development and fisheries. It is committed to effective and sustainable management of fish resources in accordance with UNCLOS, the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission, and UN Fish Stock Agreement. As a partner nation to the Coral Triangle Initiative on coral reefs, fisheries and food security, it is committed to the protection and sustainable use of marine resources.
Trade in the region
Bilateral trade with all Forum Members in 2016 amounted to USD 294,929 million, a large value of trade with Fiji and PNG as seen in the graphs below.
Between 2014 and 2016 there was a 29.92% decrease in trade.
The Philippines and Forum Members have cooperated and supported each other’s candidatures in the UN system, e.g Philippines bid for UN Security Council membership for 2004-5. The Philippines have just been elected onto the Human Rights Council for a three-year term beginning in 2016.
South-south cooperation for capacity-building initiatives is provided through the Technical Cooperation Council of the Philippines (TCCP). Sectors include agriculture, education, healthcare and tourism.
