Pacific Forum Foreign Ministers to strengthen regional preparedness

Regional preparedness and coordination on disaster management will be the focus of the Pacific Islands Forum Foreign Ministers Meeting (FFAMM) this week in Sydney, from 9 to 10 July, 2015.

Foreign Ministers will discuss opportunities to strengthen national leadership though supportive regional responses to natural hazards, drawing on lessons from the recent experiences of Cyclone Pam and Typhoon Maysak in Vanuatu and the Federated States of Micronesia, amongst other hazards such as volcanoes, floods, tsunamis and earthquakes. In addition, opportunities for regional initiatives to complement national efforts to build resilience and mitigate the effects of disasters in the Pacific will be an important part of the discussions. Access to finance for disaster preparedness, response and recovery will be a theme throughout. The outcomes of the World Humanitarian Summit, recently held in Auckland, New Zealand, will provide an important backdrop for the ministerial meeting.

Foreign Ministers will also discuss the Pacific Islands Forum’s international engagement with Post-Forum Dialogue partners, in preparation for this year’s 46th Pacific Islands Forum in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, from 7-11 September, 2015. The Pacific Islands Forum’s seventeen dialogue partners convene annually after the Forum Leaders Retreat to discuss Leaders’ regional priorities and identify areas of mutual strategic interest for further collaboration. The Forum Secretariat has recently concluded an assessment of the relationship between the Forum and the dialogue partners, which is conducted every three years to ensure alignment with the region’s priorities.

Associate Members to the Pacific Islands Forum, French Polynesia, New Caledonia and Tokelau, will also attend the ministerial meeting.

The seventeen Post-Forum Dialogue partners include: Canada, Cuba, People’s Republic of China, European Union, France, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Spain, Thailand, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.
