Common areas of strategic interest
Canada strongly supported efforts to conclude a fair and effective new international climate change agreement at COP-21 in December 2015. Canada and Forum countries are members of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) and have shared interest in the sustainable management of tuna stocks worldwide. Canada is a strong supporter of the Commonwealth Secretariat’s election observation activities and major global partner in food security initiatives. At the 2017 Oceans Conference Canada had made a number of commitments towards ocean protection including increase investments in scientific research and monitoring.
Trade in the region
In 2016 Canada’s Trade with the Pacific Region Constituted for 0.01% of Canada’s total world trade (Imports and Exports). There was a 38.45% decrease in overall trade between Canada and the Region for 2015-2016.
Canada has been active at the United Nations since its foundation in 1945 and played a key role in drafting the UN Charter – an international treaty that sets out basic principles of international relations. Today, Canada continues to uphold the UN by actively participating in the organization’s activities and providing financial support.
Climate Financing in the Pacific Region
Between 2010-2014 Canada’s supports amounted to USD 2.56m for the financing of climate related activities in the region;
