Forum Regional Security Committee to meet
The Forum Regional Security Committee (FRSC) will hold its 2015 meeting from 3 – 4 June at the Forum Secretariat in Suva, Fiji. The meeting will be attended by Forum Members and invited Associate Members, Forum Observers, regional specialised law enforcement secretariats, and relevant international and regional organisations.
Forum Secretary General, Dame Meg Taylor commended the foresight of Forum Leaders, through their 1992 Honiara Declaration, “in recognising the need for more comprehensive, integrated and collaborative responses to security threats to the region, and strengthening the FRSC accordingly.”
The FRSC, which comprises senior government officials from Pacific Islands Forum Member countries, meets annually to discuss security issues in the Pacific region including the activities of regional law enforcement agencies. The FRSC also serves an important coordination role in the sharing and dissemination of information amongst law enforcement agencies and Forum Member countries on existing and emerging security issues that Forum countries face.
Secretary General Taylor also acknowledged the work of FRSC officials and regional law enforcement agencies over the years, adding, “the FRSC as we know it is the cumulative result of our experiences and lessons learnt over many years of practice. We have shown that we are willing and able to work together to counter threats to our region, in the process, minimising duplication and maximising opportunities for enhancing a solid regional defence against security threats.”
As directed by Forum Leaders the FRSC meets once a year to review and advise on programme priorities, institutional linkages, and resource needs in the area of law enforcement cooperation and information exchange on regional and international security issues.
