United Nations

Canada has been active at the United Nations since its foundation in 1945 and played a key role in drafting the UN Charter - an international treaty that sets out basic principles of international relations. Today, Canada continues to uphold the UN by actively participating in the organization's activities and providing financial support.

Canada is the 6th largest donor to the Global Environment Facility (GEF), and the GEF’s Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF). Since 1991, the Pacific Island countries have received GEF and LCDF support for national projects totaling USD 102.4 million and USD 32.6 million respectively, as well as benefitted from numerous regional and global projects.

Common areas of strategic interest

Canada strongly supported efforts to conclude a fair and effective new international climate change agreement at COP-21 in December 2015. Canada and Forum countries are members of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) and have shared interest in the sustainable management of tuna stocks worldwide. Canada is a strong supporter of the Commonwealth Secretariat’s election observation activities and major global partner in food security initiatives.
