Pacific Ocean Alliance Meeting

Hosted by the Pacific Ocean Commissioner, Dame Meg Taylor DBE, the first meeting of Pacific Ocean Alliance stakeholders and partners was held from the 25 – 27 May 2015. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the Pacific Islands region’s ocean priorities and interests as they relate to areas beyond national jurisdiction. Areas beyond national jurisdiction amount to 64% of the world’s oceans. In turn, these areas make up nearly 50% of the surface of the Earth and include some of the most economically and environmentally important resources on the planet, including tuna and deep sea ecosystems.

The meeting was open to all stakeholders with an interest in the Pacific Ocean and areas beyond national jurisdiction. The meeting was an interactive initiative, employing a combination of informative presentations and breakout discussion groups. The meeting served the purpose of informing, and consulting with Pacific Ocean Alliance stakeholders. Outcomes of the meeting fed into the Technical Working Group meeting, which was held the following day on the 28 May. The outcomes of both meetings will feed into a revised draft of the Technical Paper, which will be provided as soon as available.

Please direct all enquiries regarding the Pacific Ocean Alliance, ‘High Hopes for High Seas’ meeting and outcomes to Dr Liz Brierley, Oceans Analyst, Office of the Pacific Ocean Commissioner at opoc@forumsec.org.
