Sustainable Development of Small Island
Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States
Closing Statement by Mr Greg Urwin
Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat
10 year review of implementation of the Programme of Action for the
Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States
Friday 14 January 2005
Mauritius
Excellencies, Our Pacific leaders have, over the past two days most eloquently articulated the challenges we face in our region and, more importantly I think, the means by which we are tackling them. I shall, therefore, be very brief.
The States of the Pacific region are committed participants in the process represented by this International Meeting in Mauritius. We shall continue to be so. We share the fundamental conviction that the establishment of a more just and equitable world must involve a sustained global recognition of the special situation of the Small Island Developing States. We therefore seek to attain many of our objectives by our commitment to the agenda established by the Barbados Plan of Action and expanded here at Mauritius. We do so in the knowledge that we must do much better in pursuit of that agenda than we have done thus far.
