10th October 2006
MISSION VISITS PICS TO INDENTIFY SME SECTORS FOR ASSISTANCE
A mission team is visiting several Pacific Island Countries this month to identify key small and medium enterprises (SME) sectors to be developed in the targeted countries.
The mission is made up of representatives from the National Small Industries Corporation (NSIC) of India, the Commonwealth Secretariat in London and the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat in Suva, Fiji
The mission will visit Fiji, Samoa, Tonga and Vanuatu.
The key objectives of the mission are to:
" Identify and establish reciprocal linkages between NSIC and the institutions responsible for investment and SME development in the region, and
" Identify opportunities for capacity building, innovation, technology transfer, marketing and product development that the Government of India could support through NSIC.
The mission is expected to identify key SME sectors for further development in the targeted Pacific Island Countries and prepare a possible plan of action to address the issues.
NSIC of India has been engaged in promoting, assisting and fostering the growth of Small Enterprises since 1955. It provides technology, marketing and financial support services to the small business sector and also facilitates international business partnerships.
The Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat and NSIC signed a Memorandum of Understanding in November last year to ascertain areas relating to small and micro-enterprises and private sector development in general that the Government of India could assist in.
India is a Pacific Islands Forum Dialogue Partner.
The Pacific Plan adopted by Forum Leaders last year identifies the private sector as a key player to help attain its goals with the SMEs expected to make a considerable contribution to the expanding PIC economies.
ENDS.
