SKILLS DEVELOPMENT STUDY UNDERWAY IN PICS
Pacific Islands Countries (PICs) will soon be able to know what type of skills are needed to fulfil the demands of the job market in the Region and how to provide training in these skills
This is the objective of the Regional Skills Development Study underway in 13 PICs. The Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS) is coordinating the Study funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) through a grant from the Japan Special Fund.
The Study's objective is to establish an effective public and private investment in skills development by strengthening vocational and technical education linkages with the labour market. This is consistent with PIFS' Forum Basic Education Plan and the ADB's Pacific Education Strategy, Iosefa Maiava, Acting Secretary General of the Forum Secretariat said.
The Study outcomes will be a set of strategies for skills development that are responsive to emerging market demands of both the formal and informal sectors.
Pacific Island Countries involved are urged to assist the domestic consultants to gather the data needed to fulfil the objective of the Study. This will involve government departments, training institutions, non-government organizations and other stakeholders, Mr Maiava said
The domestic consultants, who will be assisted by a group of international consultants engaged by the ADB, will study the following areas in each country:
- Labour markets;
- Labour mobility;
- Training needs of people in rural and remote areas; and
- Traditional skills.
Results of the Study are expected to be available by July 2007.
Countries involved in the Study are: Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.
Ends.
