SITUATION IN TONGA - STATEMENT BY FORUM CHAIR

The Chair of the Pacific Islands Forum, Hon Laisenia Qarase has expressed the Forum's deep concern about the serious disturbances which took place in the Tongan capital, Nuku'alofa on 16 November.

"We are all shocked by the acts of violence which have taken place" Mr Qarase said, "particularly as they are so uncharacteristic of Tonga and the Tongan people, and we hope they are now at an end. We very much hope that those involved in the political reform process currently underway will be able to resume a peaceful and productive dialogue. To bring about agreed change in a peaceful Tongan way will not only be critically important for Tonga itself, but for the region as a whole."

Prime Minister Qarase said the Forum was prepared to do all it usefully could to support the Government and people of Tonga in working their way through this difficult period.
