CHINA TO STUDY PROPOSALS FROM FORUM SECRETARIAT

The Government of the People s Republic of China (PRC) is studying several proposals submitted by the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat during a recent visit by Secretary General, Greg Urwin.

One of the key proposals was the idea of establishing a Joint Taskforce to coordinate, develop and monitor the implementation of the assistance package announced by Premier Wen Jiabao in April this year. A number of Forum members have requested the Secretary General to pursue this with the Government of China.

It was a useful visit as I was able to discuss several proposals from the Secretariat aimed at increasing the cooperation between members of the Pacific Islands Forum and China, as a Forum Dialogue Partner, Mr Urwin said.

China is an important partner in the implementation of the Pacific Plan and the visit was to follow up with the Government in Beijing on the issues agreed on during the China-Pacific Island Countries Economic Development and Cooperation Forum held in Fiji, April this year.

In April this year, the Premier of the State Council of China, Mr Wen Jiabao hosted the inaugural China-Pacific Island Countries Forum at Nadi.

A Guiding Framework proposed by China was signed by Cook Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Niue, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Tonga and Vanuatu at the China-PIC Forum.

The visit was also an opportunity to firm up the commitments China made during the Post-Forum Dialogue Partners meeting last year in Port Moresby.  China also contributes to the Regional Security Fund and the Import Management Programme.

Ends.
