SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS
The Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat has received USD174,000 for the implementation of Taiwan/ROC scholarship awards for the first half of 2006.
It is the latest annual contribution to the scheme which was established in 2001. To date 110 scholarships have been offered to citizens of Forum Island Countries.
The funds were presented by Taiwan's Trade Representative in Suva, Fiji, Mr Sherman Kuo, to the Forum's Deputy Secretary General for Sustainability and Good Governance, Mr Iosefa Maiava.
Twelve scholarships have been awarded this year to students from Kiribati (1), Niue (1), Republic of Marshall Islands (2) Tuvalu (2), Palau (1), Samoa (2), Solomon Islands (1) and Fiji (2).
The programmes of study for 2006 cover undergraduate and post graduate courses in education, business administration, law, marine science, computer science/technology, accounting, information systems, medicine and physiotherapy. There are currently 26 students sponsored under the scheme and most are studying at local and regional institutions.
