PIFS EMPLOYS SIS OFFICER
Smaller Island States (SIS) within the Pacific Islands Forum will now get special attention with the employment of an SIS Programme Officer within the Forum Secretariat.
SIS includes Cook Islands, Nauru, Niue, Kiribati, Palau, Republic of Marshall Islands and Tuvalu
When the Forum Leaders endorsed the Pacific Plan in Papua New Guinea last year they agreed to provide special assistance to their smaller members for the implementation of the Plan because of the special needs that they have, Greg Urwin, Secretary General of the Forum Secretariat said.
The Officer is part of a small unit set up within the Secretariat to ensure that the Smaller Island States derive the fullest possible benefit from the Plan. He will liaise with the governments of the SIS on the implementation and integration of the Pacific Plan initiatives into national planning processes as well as seek appropriate assistance to ensure that the SIS countries derive the fullest possible benefit from the Plan, Mr Urwin said.
Additionally, the Officer will provide technical support to SIS Desk Officers in each of the countries. These national officers will provide that crucial link between the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS), CROP Agencies and the SIS to realize some of their national development priorities, through direct support or through regional and sub-regional mechanisms.
The first SIS Programme Officer is Atanteora Beiatau from Kiribati. Mr Beiatau holds a Master of Economics from the University of Queensland and has served in various Kiribati government posts where his past position was as Director for the Asia and Pacific Division in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was also Chief Economist for the Kiribati Government between 1998 and 2004 and also worked for the Kiribati Housing Corporation and Kiribati Provident Fund.
Ends.
