PIFS CONGRATULATES PIAF
The Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat congratulates the Pacific Islands AIDS Foundation (PIAF) on its anniversary on 4th July.
In the four years it has been in existence, PIAF has achieved a great deal in making people in the Pacific Region more aware of this killer disease and the effects it has on our communities, Greg Urwin, Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat said.
PIAF's contribution to the achievement of the Pacific Leaders Vision that all its people can lead free and worthwhile lives is highly commended.
One of the eight themes of the Pacific Regional Strategy on HIV/AIDS that was adopted by our Leaders in 2004 concerns the human rights and involvement of people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS. This entails ensuring that people living with HIV/AIDS are actively involved and supported and cared for by mainstream services.
Our Leaders are committed to fighting this killer disease but such a commitment could only be achieved with the help of people-centred organizations such as PIAF. We need to hold hands with PIAF and work together to advocate for and create a supportive environment for the involvement of people living with HIV/AIDS. We need to eliminate HIV-related discrimination and involve people living with the virus as key partners in the response to the disease, Mr Urwin said.
