PICs BENEFIT FROM MICRO FINANCE TRAINING
Several Pacific Island Countries have benefited so far from a Microfinance Training Program supported by the Government of Indonesia and coordinated by the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS), Suva, Fiji.
The purpose of this training program is to improve the understanding of the public policy maker and business practitioner as well as commercial bankers and non-government organisations regarding micro financing programs, Greg Urwin, Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat said.
These capacity building workshops are being conducted as part of the Secretariat's Private Sector Development work and the interesting thing about this training is that it benefits the grassroots of our member countries.
Indonesia, which is a Forum Dialogue Partner, is commended for providing technical assistance for these training workshops, Mr Urwin said
This capacity building project was made possible through the Pacific Islands Forum's Official Observership with the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) of which Indonesia is a member.
The training has been delivered by the Bank Rakyat Indonesia, (BRI) which has a microfinance programme that has been recognised by varous institutions including the World Bank and the United Nations.
The current series of workshops commenced last week in Vanuatu and the Republic of Marshall Islands, where the Federated States of Micronesia was also represented. It will end with a workshop in Tonga which will also have representatives from Cook Islands.
BRI and PIFS also conducted similar workshops in February 2005 in Fiji, Kiribati and Tuvalu, which was significant in view of the United Nation's declaration of 2005 as the International Year of Microcredit.
