PRESS STATEMENT

ICT TASKFORCE AGREE ON NEED FOR REGIONAL RESOURCE CENTRE
There is agreement on the need for a Pacific Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Regional Resource Centre to advance regional and sub-regional cooperation in ICT matters.
This is one of the outcomes of a meeting of the Taskforce on Regional Approaches to ICTs in the Pacific held in Nadi, Fiji, yesterday following consideration of a draft proposal put together by consultants.
"This draft proposal has the potential to advance the Regional Digital Strategy approved by Pacific Island Leaders when they adopted the Pacific Plan in Papua New Guinea last year and key road map components and tangible outcomes," Alfred Soakai, Chairperson of the Taskforce and Senior Communications Counsel in the Tongan Department of Communications.
"Members of the Taskforce will now study the draft proposal for the establishment of the Regional ICT Resource Centre before it is submitted to the Pacific Islands ICT Ministers for their consideration," Mr Soakai explained.
He added: "From the reports received during the meeting today, it is very encouraging to note the intensive cooperation among member countries including Australia and New Zealand and the Pacific Islands Telecommunications Association (PITA) in ICT matters."
"This can only mean a further strengthening of implementation of the Regional Digital Strategy for the good of Pacific Island Countries especially our rural population."
A report of the outcome of the meeting will be sent to the Ministers" of Information and Communication.
It is proposed the ICT Taskforce meets again before a meeting of the ICT Ministers scheduled for mid-next year.
The Taskforce was set up at the Pacific Islands Forum ICT Ministers meeting in Wellington in March this year to investigate the potential options for regional or sub-regional cooperation in development and effective use of ICT to facilitate economic growth, sustainable development, good governance and security.
ENDS.
