GENDER ISSUES IN PEACE AND SECURITY POLICY
The attainment of peace and security in our region is as much about protecting the rights of all our people to live stable and socially safe lives, as it is about anything else. Gender issues cut across all aspects of human and political security and demands our policy attention , says Forum Secretary General, Greg Urwin.
He was speaking ahead of a Regional Workshop on Gender, Conflict, Peace and Security which opened today. This is a joint initiative by the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, AusAID, UNDP Pacific Sub Regional Centre, UNIFEM Pacific, FemLINK PACIFIC and the International Women's Development Agency (IWDA).
The workshop was officially opened by Dr. Shaista Shameem, Director of Fiji Human Rights Commission, who in 2005 was appointed by the Chairperson of the UN Commission of Human Rights, as a member of the Working Group on the use of Mercernaries.
70 delegates from Pacific Island Forum Countries; including representatives from foreign affairs, law enforcement, NGOs, development partners, and the military, are discussing ways to make security processes more gender-responsive at national and regional levels. Workshop recommendations will be presented to the 2006 Forum Regional Security Committee (FRSC) meeting on Tuesday 20 June.
The first day concluded with a screening of Picking up the Pieces: Bougainville a new UNIFEM-funded documentary on the impact of the Bougainville crisis on women, children and communities. A photo exhibition was also launched, Women's Eye on Peace, a selection of Pacific-related images portraying women's views of peace.
