ICT STAKEHOLDERS DISCUSS REGULATION, NGNS AND CONVERGENCE ISSUES

The Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat in partnership with AusAID, the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) the Pacific Islands Telecommunications Association (PITA) and the World Bank, is hosting two regional ICT workshops, from the 2 - 6 October 2006 in Nadi, Fiji.

On the 2 and 3 October the World Bank's infoDev will be facilitating the two-day workshop on Capacity Building for ICT/Telecom Regulators and Policy Makers in the Pacific. It will focus on new technologies and their implications, rural access issues, and practical tools for policy makers and regulators. The objective is to provide regulators, operators, policy makers, sector experts, and the general public with the latest information on regulation strategies, best practices, and case studies.

From the 4 - 6 October, the Pacific Islands Telecommunications Association will lead the workshop on Next Generation Networks (NGNs) and Convergence. The objective of this three-day workshop is to help policymakers; regulators and operators plan for the introduction of totally IP based networks and technologies themselves. Other issues that will be covered include interconnection and performance issues.

The weeks' workshops will culminate with the Taskforce on Regional Approaches to ICTs convening their second meeting on 7 October also in Nadi. The Taskforce on Regional Approaches to ICTs was established at the Pacific Islands Forum Information and Communications Technologies Ministers' Meeting, held in Wellington, New Zealand in March of this year. The key objective of the Taskforce is to investigate the potential for developing regional approaches to ICTs to further the implementation of the Pacific Plan and the Regional Digital Strategy.
