EU 10M EURO TO REGION
The European Union has provided an additional 10 million Euro to the Pacific region to assist with economic, fisheries and agriculture programmes.
The extra funding for the Pacific Regional Indicative Programme was co-signed today by the European Commission's Director-General of Development, Mr. Stefano Manservisi, and Forum Secretary General, Mr. Greg Urwin.
On behalf of the region Mr. Urwin thanked the European Union for its continued generosity.
The European Union is an important development partner having provided in excess of EURO 2 billion in grant aid and trade concessions to Pacific Island Countries over the last 30 years , Mr Urwin said.
This additional EU support is very much welcomed, especially now, as we move forward putting the Pacific Plan into action, Mr Urwin said.
This outcome recognises both the region's needs and performance over the last four years and is a remarkable achievement, Mr Manservisi said. This 35% icrease in funding will enable the EU to continue supporting the Regional Programme in key areas such as EPA negotiations, tuna stock assessment and agricultural trade facilitation
The Pacific region is the only ACP region where such an increase had been granted , he said. Mr. Manservisi congratulated the Pacific ACP countries and their regional organisations, especially the Forum Secretariat, for achieving such an excellent result.
