CHINA GRANTS US$150,000 FOR PIFS PROGRAMS
The Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS) has received US$150,000 from the government of the Peoples Republic of China towards the Regional Security Fund (US$50,000) and the 2nd Phase of the Pacific Islands Forum Import Management Program (US$100,000).
As a Post Forum Dialogue Partner PRC continues to play an important role in the implementation of initiatives under the Pacific Plan , Greg Urwin, Secretary General of PIFS said.
This latest funding from China will greatly assist the PIFS implementation of the security and economic initiatives under the Pacific Plan, Mr Urwin said.
The Regional Security Fund facilitates a timely response to crisis situations and is to assist Forum Islands Countries (FICs) to develop approaches to, and capacity in, Preventive Diplomacy, Conflict Resolution and Peace-Building in accordance with the aims of the Biketawa Declaration.
Several members of the Forum have so far received assistance under the Fund.
The Import Management Program, funded by China, enables the Secretariat to cost effectively maintain expertise through support and technical assistance for the ongoing development needs of members for key import commodities including petroleum.
Due to the success of the project with Petroleum Advisory Services to the member countries, the Pacific Plan has identified the potential to expand this concept to other commodities of national interest and the development of integrated import and export management plans.
