FORUM OFFICIALS COMMITTEE MEETING

Senior Officials from the 16 member and 4 observer countries of the Pacific Islands Forum and representatives of the regional organisations will gather at the Forum Secretariat in Suva, Fiji, 3 - 4 October for a meeting of the Forum Officials Committee (FOC), the governing body of the Secretariat.

The meeting is to both prepare for the Leaders' meeting later in October and approve governing body issues for the Secretariat.

"This is the second year the Officials meeting is being held several weeks prior to the Forum Leaders Meeting later in the month instead of immediately before it. FOC has also combined the pre-Forum session and the Budget and Work Programme to promote more efficient use of the senior officials' time while they are away from their capitals," Greg Urwin, Secretary General of the Forum said.

"This new scheduling of the pre-Forum session allows Leaders more time to consider the recommendations and make decisions."

The meeting will receive a report from the Forum Secretary General on the Secretariat's activities for the past year and an update on the implementation of the Pacific Plan, adopted by Forum Leaders during their meeting in Papua New Guinea last year. It also has on its agenda a number of policy issues requiring a decision by the Committee.

At the end of the FOC Meeting, the Committee Chair will send a letter to the Chair of the Forum outlining decisions made by the Committee.

The FOC Meeting will be preceded by a one-day meeting of the Pacific Plan Action Committee (PPAC) also at the Forum Secretariat in Suva on 2 October. PPAC, which is made up of senior officials from the Forum member countries, observers from non-Forum Pacific countries and other stakeholders, oversees the implementation of the Plan.
