iKiribati encouraged to contribute to Pacific development agenda

Tarawa, Kiribati (February 26, 2018) – The on-going region-wide policy consultations based on the Framework for Pacific Regionalism continues this week in Kiribati with a delegation from the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat here to accept submissions.

The Forum Secretariat has been travelling the region since the latter part of 2017 to develop a deeper understanding of the common issues and challenges that face the people of the region.

The key themes that emerge from the consultations will be used to shape future regional policy, including a regional security declaration or Biketawa Plus, and a proposed collective Forum foreign policy.

“These consultations are a platform through which all Pacific persons can contribute to the regional development agenda. This is how the health issue of cervical cancer became a regional priority and we encourage Pacific citizens to make submissions if there are areas they feel merit regional attention,” Sione Tekiteki, the Forum Secretariat Governance and Engagement Director, said.

“It is a privilege to be able to do this in person Kiribati. We welcome input from anyone who through their work or even personal experiences feel they would like to contribute to the strengthening of our Blue Pacific.

“Forum Leaders have said very clearly that policy initiatives driven by Pacific regionalism, where we work together as one Blue Pacific continent for our collective common good, must be informed by Pacific people so they can effectively benefit Pacific people.”

The consultations will then move to Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Samoa and French Polynesia. The Forum Secretariat is also conducting reviews of existing work relating to Biketawa Plus, the proposed Forum foreign policy, regional labour mobility, and strengthening Pacific resilience to climate change and disaster.
