WORKSHOP DISCUSSES DRAFT REGIONAL STATISTICS STUDY REPORT

The move towards strengthening regional statistical systems took another step forward with the conclusion of a two-day workshop held in Nadi, Fiji from 20 – 21 April.

The workshop was attended by Forum member country representatives, including heads of national statistics offices, and senior officials from the Ministries of Finance and Planning, as well as development partner representatives from the Asian Development Bank, AusAID, European Commission, NZAid, OECD (PARIS21 Secretariat), Pacific Financial Technical Assistance Centre, UNDP, UNDP Pacific Centre, UNICEF, UNIFEM, UNFPA, University of the South Pacific and World Bank.

The Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat and the Secretariat of the Pacific Community jointly organised the workshop.

The Secretary General of the Forum Secretariat, Tuiloma Neroni Slade said the workshop and the study were important milestones in a process that was sanctioned by the Forum Economic Ministers’ Meeting (FEMM) in 2006, building on the Pacific Plan's Initiative 12.4 which recognises the need to “upgrade and extend country and regional statistical information systems and databases across all sectors.”

“The interest in improving statistics is broad-based and driven among others by the need for informed policy making in our region to ensure good governance and efficient allocation of scarce resources for economic development,” said Mr Slade.

The workshop helped to widen the group of stakeholders consulted, building on those consultations that had occurred previously. This considered step facilitated more ownership in the development of the benchmark study, and allowed for collation of inputs that will contribute to the consultants work in finalising more robust design of the possible options for eventual implementation.

Views of the workshop participants will now be incorporated into the final report of the Benchmark Study on Regional Approaches to Statistical Services to be presented to the next FEMM to be held in Rarotonga, the Cook Islands later this year.

Ends.
