SIS and PACP Leaders' meetings start series of Forum meetings in Australia

SIS AND PACP LEADERS’ MEETINGS KICK OFF FORUM LEADERS’ MEETINGS IN AUSTRALIA
Cairns, 3 August 2009:
Climate change, sub-regional shipping, transportation, labour mobility, bulk procurement of petroleum products as well as trade issues will be the focus of the two meetings that will kick off the series of Pacific Islands Forum Leaders’ meetings to be held in Australia’s northern city of Cairns 4 – 7 August.
The Smaller Islands States (SIS) Leaders’ as well as the Pacific ACP (PACP) Leaders’ meetings will be held on Tuesday 4 August ahead of the 40th Pacific Islands Forum which officially opens on 5th August at the Cairns Convention Centre.
Membership of SIS includes Cook Islands, Kiribati, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Republic of Marshall Islands and Tuvalu. PACP members include all member countries of the Forum with the exception of Australia and New Zealand, plus Timor Leste.
High on the agenda of the SIS Leaders’ meeting will be the issue of climate change and the progress to date on implementing key priorities of the Niue Declaration on Climate Change in the SIS including financing of climate change activities and strengthening regional meteorological services. The issue of improved shipping services between SIS members and the larger Forum Island Countries, and bulk procurement and storage of petroleum between the SIS members will also be discussed.
The PACP Leaders will discuss the status of the implementation of the Pacific Island Countries Trade Agreement (PICTA). They will also discuss major developments on the negotiations of the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) with the European Union.
The PACP Leaders will also be updated on the progress to establish a Chief Trade Adviser to assist members of the group in the PACER Plus negotiations with Australia and New Zealand.
Mr Stefano Manservisi, Director General for Development and Relations with ACP States within the European Commission will also address the PACP Leaders.
