SENIOR FIC OFFICIALS DISCUSS AID EFFECTIVENESS AT WORKSHOP
The effective delivery of development assistance to the Forum Island countries will be the focus of senior government officials and development partners when they meet in Nadi, Fiji 4 – 7 April for the Pacific Regional Workshop on Aid Effectiveness.
The workshop is jointly coordinated by the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, (PIFS) the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
The workshop follows the adoption last year by Pacific Island Countries and Development Partners of the Pacific Principles of Aid Effectiveness which draws heavily on the Paris Declaration on Aid Effectiveness.
Five Pacific Island Countries namely Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Cook Islands and Tonga have signed up to the Paris Declaration.
“Development assistance plays a key role in the economics of Pacific Island Countries and when they adopted the Pacific Plan in 2005, Pacific Leaders recognized that aid effectiveness is an imperative in the planning and implementation of the Plan,” says Feleti Teo, Acting Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat.
Mr Teo adds: “The effective delivery of development assistance in the region depends on several factors including leadership and ownership of development, better coordination to avoid duplication as well as monitoring and evaluation frameworks to ensure commitments are delivered.”
During the workshop participants will discuss the progress made on the implementation of the Pacific Principles on Aid Effectiveness in particular the key Paris and Pacific Principles and their linkages including the status of their implementation and implications on resources.
They will also discuss the incorporation of the principles into policies and practices at a country level and constraints, good practice and lessons learnt.
The workshop will discuss preparations and issues for the High Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness to be held in Accra later this year.
