IMPLEMENTING THE PACIFIC PLAN:
Officials meet to gauge progress and a way forward

The region’s senior government officials and technical agency heads meet today in Nadi, Fiji, to deliberate on progress of the Pacific Plan.

Convening is the Pacific Plan Action Committee (PPAC), responsible for oversight of the Pacific Plan’s implementation.

The Committee is chaired by the Forum Chair and comprises senior government representatives from all Forum Members, as well as observers from Council of Regional Organisations in the Pacific (CROP) agencies and Pacific Territories.

Pacific Islands Forum Secretary General, Greg Urwin, reiterated the Pacific Plan’s standing as a ‘living document’ and entry point for discussions on greater regional cooperation and integration.

“Priorities endorsed in the Forum Leaders’ 2007 Vava’u Decisions on the Pacific Plan encapsulated both continuing and emerging areas in the Pacific that require attention, should the region be in a position to fully benefit from its human and resource potential,” remarked Mr Urwin.

These decisions cover a broad range of priorities, of which progress will be deliberated on today by the Committee.

Five priorities have been identified by Leaders as ‘key’ for the region’s development, including fisheries, energy, trade and economic integration, climate change and transport.

Pacific Plan initiatives are implemented at the regional level by CROP agencies and donors, and at the national level by Forum Member governments.

Progress on the Plan’s implementation is coordinated by the Forum Secretariat.

The Pacific Plan draws attention to four key areas of economic growth, sustainable development, good governance and security.

It was endorsed by Forum Leaders in October 2005.
