PRESS STATEMENT (50/08)
26th June 2008
Pacific Islands Forum-Fiji Joint Working Group on the Situation in Fiji
Special Meeting, 26 June 2008, Forum Secretariat, Suva
OUTCOMES
The Chair of the Working Group convened a special meeting of the Working Group (to which all members were invited) on 26 June 2008 at the Forum Secretariat Headquarters in Suva. The meeting was attended by senior officials from Australia, Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Tuvalu.
Working Group members discussed the letter from the Interim Prime Minister to the Forum Chair advising that Fiji would no longer participate in Working Group meetings. Working Group members endorsed the views expressed by their Chair on 20 June that the Working Group is a valuable channel for dialogue between officials; one that members would be disappointed to see closed. Working Group members reiterated their call for Fiji to remain engaged with its regional neighbours by continuing to be a member of the Working Group.
The Working Group agreed to provide a briefing to the Forum Chair through the Acting Secretary General, immediately following the meeting.
