Forum Chair comments on WHO candidate and Fiji

Regional Director of the WHO Western Pacific Region

The Chair of the Forum and Premier of Niue, Honorable Toke Talagi is disappointed that
Dr Viliamu Ta’u Tonga did not get the vote for the post of the Regional Director of the
WHO Western Pacific Region.

The Chair is concerned at the degree of discussion that has taken place and the implied
criticism of Forum disunity on this issue. The Forum Communiqué is clear of the support
for Dr Tangi and as Chair, is disappointed that some Ministers did not heed that decision.

The Chair said: “This is one of the things that I will be reporting on and seeking better
communication and clarity of information transfer to Ministers; Forums integrity is
extremely important and these incidences will only do harm to Forums reputation.”

Court Decision on the Interim Government in Fiji

With respect to the Court Decision on the Interim Government in Fiji, the Chair of Forum
has reviewed the decision and will make no comment other than to say that what it seems
to do is perpetuate coupe culture in Fiji which he believes current Interim Government
has stated is keen to banish.

The Chair points out that in the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders decision in Niue in
August, the desire for continued dialogue and engagement is paramount, and this process
was never contingent on any court decisions, or other factors.

The Pacific Island Forum Leaders decision in Niue has always been based on the Interim
Prime Ministers promise in Tonga that he will hold democratic elections in March 2009.
This is still the Forum Leaders’ desire and expectation. Forum Island countries are committed to assisting Fiji meet that deadline.
