Regional Conference on Women, Peace and Human Security
Regional Conference on Women, Peace and Human Security
25th April 2007
“Be assured some of us are champions of your cause and we are committed to advocating and raising women, peace and security issues at the regional level.”
These were the words of His Excellency Peter Eafeare, Papua New Guinea High Commissioner to Fiji and Pacific Island Forum Chair, speaking at the opening of the Regional Conference on Women, Peace and Human Security at the Tokatoka Resort in Nadi on 24 April 2007.
The High Commissioner also stressed the importance of consulting women on Human Security policy making, as well as understanding their needs and priorities.
“It must be taken into account that women comprise half of the region’s population and have made immense contributions to socio-economic and political developments in their respective countries,” he said.
The two day conference is a response to Pacific Islands Forum Leaders’ requirement that organisations involved with enhancing regional safety and security focus on broader human security issues.
The conference is being convened by the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, UNDP Pacific Centre and FemLink Pacific.
It is also a follow-up to last years Gender, Peace and Security meeting, convened by the Forum Secretariat, UNDP, UNIFEM, AUSAID and FemLink Pacific and the International Women’s Development Agency (IWDA) in Nadi.
Bringing together government representatives, regional civil society organisations and development partners, the conference aims to identify a core set of threats to women’s human security and to map out existing capabilities and gaps at both the national and regional levels.
The outcomes of this meeting will be tabled at the Civil Society Organisation Human Security Consultation to be convened tomorrow, as well as at the Regional Human Security Conference at the Holiday Inn on 30–31 April.
The series of three meetings is a lead up to the Forum Regional Security Committee Meeting in June this year, at which a paper on Human Security will be presented to Forum officials.
