PROGRESSING THE PACIFIC PLAN:
Meeting highlights priorities for 2008

The final meeting for 2007 of the Pacific Plan Action Committee (PPAC) concluded today in Nuku’alofa, Tonga.

Pacific Islands Forum Secretary General, Greg Urwin, explained this particular PPAC meeting would submit for Leaders’ consideration and endorsement a list of recommendations highlighting areas for implementation under the Pacific Plan for 2008.

“Following considerable deliberation by PPAC, these priority areas have been identified within the context of Forum Members’ own development needs,” said Mr Urwin.

“They encapsulate both continuing and emerging areas requiring attention to support greater regional cooperation and integration, including fisheries, transport, climate change, energy and trade and economic integration.”

Following the 38th Pacific Islands Forum in Tonga on 16 and 17 October 2007, Leaders will once again provide direction on priority areas for implementation in support of the Pacific Plan for 2008.

“This follows a similar approach undertaken last year which proved very useful over 2007,” remarked Mr Urwin.

He added this was evident from the encouraging progress reported in the draft 2007 Pacific Plan Annual Progress Report, which will also be presented to Leaders next month for their consideration.

The PPAC is responsible for the oversight of the Pacific Plan’s implementation, which is being implemented by a broad range of stakeholders including national governments, regional technical agencies and development partners.

PPAC comprises of senior government officials from all Forum Members and is supported by the region’s technical agencies. Pacific Territories currently hold observer status in the PPAC.

Progress on the Pacific Plan’s implementation is monitored by the Forum Secretariat.

The Pacific Plan was adopted by Forum Leaders in 2005 as the guide for development of economic growth, sustainable development, good governance and security for the Pacific through regionalism.
