FORUM TEAM TO OBSERVE NAURU’s ELECTIONS

A team of observers representing the Pacific Islands Forum is on Nauru this week to observe its General Elections, which will be held on 25 August.

"We were pleased to accept the invitation of the Government of Nauru to observe its elections. The presence of our team demonstrates the ongoing support of Forum members for democratic governance, political stability and economic rehabilitation in Nauru," Greg Urwin, Secretary General of the Forum Secretariat said today.

The Forum team consists of Mrs Makurita Baaro, former Chief Secretary and Secretary to the Cabinet of Kiribati, and Mr Pita Vuki, Supervisor of Elections of Tonga, as well as two Forum Secretariat staff.

The team arrived on Nauru on 17 August and will remain until 31 August.

The team will seek to gain a broad overview of the environment in which the elections take place, the electoral process and the elections themselves and will report to the Secretary General.  Copies of the report will be provided to the Government and election authorities of Nauru.

This will be the second Forum team to observe Nauru’s elections after the deployment of a team to the last elections in 2004.   In recent years the Forum has also fielded election observers in the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Bougainville and Fiji, and most recently observed last month’s national elections in Papua New Guinea.

"The Forum's involvement in observing elections has proven a successful exercise in regional cooperation and also provides for valuable sharing of expertise between Forum members," Mr Urwin said.
