PACIFIC ISLANDS FORUM PAYS TRIBUTE TO FIRST DIRECTOR OF SPEC, LATE MAHE TUPOUNIUA

The Pacific Islands Forum has paid tribute to the first Director of the Pacific Islands Forum known then as the South Pacific Economic Community (SPEC), Mahe Tupouniua from Tonga who passed away last weekend at his home in Auckland.

“As the first Director of what was then called SPEC the late Mr Tupouniua was critically instrumental in shaping the regional cooperation structures that we continue to build on in the region,” Greg Urwin, Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat said.

“He was greatly respected by many of us and will be sorely missed,” Mr Urwin said.

The late Mr Tupouniua was Director of SPEC from 1972 to 1979 and again from 1983 to 1986.
