China presents grant to PIFS

PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA HANDS OVER GRANT TO PIFS FOR REGIONAL PROJECTS

The People's Republic of China (PRC) today presented US$650,000 as a grant to the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat for the funding of several regional projects.

The money was handed over by H.E. Cai Jinbiao, China’s Ambassador to Fiji to Greg Urwin, Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat during a brief ceremony at the Secretariat in Suva, Fiji.

“This gesture of friendship by the Government of the People’s Republic of China is very much welcomed by member countries of the Forum. The grant will go towards funding important regional projects,” Mr Urwin says.

“I wish to thank China for continuing to remain engaged with, and supportive of the Forum and for their continued assistance to the development efforts of the region.”

“As a Post-Forum Dialogue Partner, China has continued to assist the region in its implementation of the Pacific Plan since it was endorsed by Forum Leaders in 2005 and this is very much welcomed by countries in the region,” says Mr Urwin.

The grant is for the following projects:

• US$150,000 to the Pacific Islands Forum – People’s Republic of China Cooperation Fund (US$80,000 for strengthening the Forum’s trade and economic cooperation with PRC, US$50,000 to the Regional Security Fund; and US$20,000 for publication and management of the scholarships from China)

• US$100,000 to the third phase of Forum’s import management project; and

• US$400,000 for the Forum Aviation Action Plan, Integrated Port Development Project and the Rural and Remote ICT Access Project.
