KOREA TRADE FUNDS

Korea's Ambassador HE Bong-joo Kim has handed over US$50,000 to help fund trade-related work at the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat.

The Forum is sincerely grateful to the Government of Korea for the generous support it has provided since 2000 for the region's trade policy initiatives,  said Forum Secretary General, Greg Urwin.

The support has helped to fund the position of the Trade Policy Adviser and assisted with studies on regional and multilateral trade issues,  Mr Urwin said.

The trade policy work by the Forum Secretariat includes the establishment of a free trade area among 14 Forum Island Countries; multilateral trade policies involving the special needs of the Forum Island countries in the World Trade Organisation, the current Doha Round of negotiations.

Other work covers technical assistance, including studies relating to broadening of the Pacific Island Countries Trade Agreement, and enhanced protection of traditional knowledge through strengthened Intellectual Property Rights and systems.
