Forum Secretary General Welcomes End of Tongan Strike

The Secretary-General of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, Greg Urwin, today welcomed the news that the strike in Tonga is over.
The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of Tonga and the Public Service Association was described by Mr Urwin as a significant outcome, amicably bringing to a close the events of the past 6 weeks. "I am very pleased for the people and Government of Tonga that they have been able to resolve their differences amicably and can now move on." Mr Urwin said.
The Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat had been asked by the Government of Tonga to assist with the financial analysis of the cost of the proposed salary increases during the negotiation process. "That work was underway but events turned favorably before the work was completed. Nevertheless we are ready to continue with that assistance and play whatever supportive role may be required," Mr Urwin said.
