Trade and Trade Policy: A Guide for Commonwealth Parliamentarians in the Pacific Region

Please click on the link to read/download the new Commonwealth guide on trade policy for Pacific Parliamentarians by the Commonwealth Secretariat.

It is a publically available document that will be invaluable for policy makers, NGO’s, the private sector, students and the general public to familiarise themselves with important trade concepts that are shaping our world.

Globalisation and the multilateral trading environment are bringing fundamental changes to every economy, with implications for regionalism and nation building. As such, it is essential that we as people of the Pacific are aware of the potential benefits, as well as implications for our region.

Given that the FICs are engaged in multiple and complex trade negotiations, such as the PACER Plus and will be affected by larger ones we aren’t directly involved in such as the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) Agreement and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) Agreement, a simple and straightforward manual that homes in on the key issues and facilitates their accurate and overarching assessment by Parliament, and discussion by stakeholders is invaluable.

As you know, trade policy and trade agreements are very technical in nature, guides such as this new one will be of great value in assisting the people’s representatives in Parliament vet, scrutinise and refine their national trade engagement in their oversight role. As well it will assist all stakeholders in asking the essential questions, and facilitating their engagement in this important conversation.

A further updated version of this document will be released shortly.
