Pacific Islands Forum Secretarait
Young Professionals Training & Development Forum
Who is a Young Professional?

An emergent professional is any person under the age of 40 who is committed to his/her personal and professional development and desires to positively impact his/her sphere.

Brief Background

In recognition of the need to foster the development of young people with policy skills within the region; for the scaling up of human resources required for the strengthened policy mandate of Forum Secretariat and for associated effective implementation of the Pacific Plan, the Forum Secretariat initially appointed five graduates / young working professionals to be attached across the Secretariat’s divisions for a 12 month period.

The Young Professionals Programme commenced in January 2007. However for the purposes of this Forum, the Training is not limited to Young Professionals that have been recruited by the Forum Secretariat but intends to capture all Professionals under the age of 40 inclusive of Research Assistants, Administrative Assistants, Accountants, Lawyers, Doctors, Engineers, Teachers, Academics and the like.

The Young Professional Training and Development Forum is an initiative spearheaded by the Young Professionals (“YPs”) of the Forum Secretariat around June 2008. The concept was birthed during ordinary coffee sessions amongst the YPs. It was recognised that there was a need to create a Forum where YPs could discuss and debate issues affecting the Pacific, harness and hone their research skills, develop their writing skills, and advance in their articulation of issues.

Other young professionals from strategic sectors, including but not limited to those in CROP agencies are welcome to join the Training and Development Sessions.

The primary objectives are to increase collaboration and to create intellectual, social and moral cohesion in professional development of all those who become members and to create an acute sense of obligation in them. Development is strategic as it is holistic.

A range of key individuals from within the Forum Secretariat and outside the Secretariat would be invited to address the Group on a diverse range of issues that are canvassed within the various pillars of the Pacific Plan. It is hoped that this will create, stimulate a vibrant, powerful, healthy information sharing and networking culture.

These Professionals will be required to undertake research papers of matters of interest relating to any of the four pillars of the Pacific Plan.
