The Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat was established in 1972 by the Pacific Islands Forum to encourage economic and political cooperation between its member countries*, and between these states and other countries. 

SECRETARY GENERAL 

The Pacific Islands Forum is seeking a suitably qualified and experienced person to be appointed as Secretary General. The Secretary General is the most senior regional administrator and is appointed by and answerable directly to Forum Leaders through the Forum Chair. It is expected the position will by filled by an individual of vision and energy, and capable of the highest quality output under the most demanding circumstances. 

The Secretary General as Chief Executive Officer of the Secretariat is accountable and responsible to Forum member countries for: 

• provision of high quality executive leadership;
• efficient and effective executive management of the Forum Secretariat, staff and assets;
• delivery of high quality services and advice to member governments;
• consultative functions at the highest level in the advocacy of the interests of the Pacific Islands Forum with foreign and international organisations;
• servicing the Pacific Islands Forum, the Forum Officials Committee (FOC) and such Ministerial Meetings, Councils, Committees, or Working Groups that may be established by the Forum or FOC;
• effective and constructive conduct and chairing of the Council of Regional Organisations of the Pacific (CROP);
• prompt and effective implementation of directives and mandates from the Forum or Forum Officials Committee;
• efficient and effective implementation of the Secretariat’s Work Programme; and
• any other responsibilities that may be determined from time to time by the Leaders and or the Forum Chair. 

The appointee would be expected to have appropriate tertiary qualifications; mature personal attributes; executive leadership and management in government or inter-governmental organisations; experience and understanding of the development needs of Pacific Island Countries and of the international issues affecting the region; credibility as an advocate or representative of the Pacific Islands Forum membership; capacity for and commitment to the provision of high quality service and advice at the highest levels of government; experience and understanding of regional issues and processes; and capacity for analysis and creative solutions to complex problems. 

The appointment will carry a competitive remuneration and benefits package. For non-Fiji citizens remuneration will be tax-free in Fiji. It is the responsibility of the applicant to check the tax status of the Forum Secretariat salary in their home country. The appointment will be for three years, with a possible further three year renewal. The Forum Secretariat is an equal opportunity employer and encourages both women and men to apply for its positions. 

The appointee must be a national of a Forum member country* and must be endorsed and nominated by their government. Expressions of interest are to be directed through the candidate’s own government who will submit their nomination to the Forum Chair. Forum members may nominate no more than one candidate and nominations are to be received by the Forum Chair no later than 30th July, 2008.
