Common areas of strategic interest

Priority interests between the Forum and Indonesia include protection of the environment, renewable energy, energy efficiency, and climate change. Human rights and a moratorium on use of death penalty have been a long-standing area of common interest between Italy and PIF members. Support marine protected areas and a sustainable, climate resilient, ocean-based economy in Pacific Small Islands Developing States (PSIDS). Italy has made a number of commitments at the 2017 Oceans Conference including Support to resilient ocean-based society in SIDS through water access and renewable energy.

Trade in the region

 

At the end of 2016 it was recorded that USD 689,659m was traded within the Region. There has been a 16.14% decrease in trade with the Pacific Region at the end of 2015. At the end of 2016 there had been a significant increase of 134.1% in trade with the region.

United Nations

Italy is a member of the UNSC and UNSC reform and is in favour of a stronger representation of small island developing states (SIDS). Italy was among the main sponsors of the UN resolution on Climate Change.

Development cooperation

Italy’s main support to the region is channelled through the European Union:

Climate Finance in the Pacific Region
